Casentino, Viola
Casentino cloth is a traditional wool fabric, typical of the Casentino Valley in Italy.
The fabric is felted to make it waterproof and brushed on one side to obtain the typical Casentino surface.
The curl(which looks like pilling!) was obtained by rubbing wool with a stone, while today machines (rattinatrice) are used to produce it. The properties of the fabric guarantee perfect thermal insulation and breathabilty at the same time.
The tradition of wool processing in Casentino is documented since the Etruscan and Roman eras, but sheep farming saw a growing development starting from the 15th century. The birth of the first Casentino cloth is attested in 1537.
The wool mill of Stia, starting from 1890, started out producing “capes for horses" of this material, intended to cover animals. The popularity of the Casentino fabric rose rapidly, thanks to its resistance and compactness, initially among the humblest classes but later also among the highest.
We visited the mill in 2023 and are happy to be able to offer a few Casentino products!
